The Guardian - Online edition
Numerous images from this flight have sold into print publication - the latest use example is shown below published in the online edition of The Guardian newspaper in the UK.
When I shot this I thought maybe it might be used to illustrate urban planning, road infrastructure or suburban homes - the link below shows it has been used in relation to gardening - that's often the way with stock photos, the client end use is often beyond my own initial ideas - great I'm glad it meets their needs.

Solar panels

With a south facing exterior this idea is sure generate plenty of solar electricity. It begs the question as to why modern new build office blocks don't incorporate such panels from the outset.
The image could be used to help illustrate modifications and alterations that could be used by local business to save themselves money and be seen to be going "green" at the same time.

The First World War veteran Harry Patch died today in the early morning. I live in the same town as Mr Patch and had been lucky enough to meet him several times. He was a very dignified and modest man and it was an honour to meet him. The words below relate to an earlier Blog entry from November 2008 when Harry attended the Remembrance Day service at his local church here in Wells.
God Bless Harry Patch.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Patch is a veteran from the First World War one of only three left alive in the UK. What makes Mr Patch unique is that he is the sole surviving trench fighting "Tommy" soldier. He is a man of great dignity and grace and aged 110 years old, a true super centenarian.
This photo shows Harry Patch arriving to attend the Remembrance Day service in his home town of Wells Somerset on 9th November 2008.
On the following Wednesday Harry attended a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph in London.

If you get the opportunity to visit Istanbul make sure you spend some time down at the waterfront at Eminonu. This is the major ferry pier area and offers great views of the constant ferry boat and ship traffic that dominates the Bosphorus waters that split this great city.

I managed to get along to this local rugby derby match between Wells RFC and Tor RFC. It was a very good game to watch in near perfect weather. The first half was all Tor both in terms of possession and territory with two tries - Wells scored a penalty kick. The second half was more evenly balanced with Wells almost scoring several times before Chris Saunders did touch down. A late try for Tor sealed their victory.

At the moment much of the south side of Bath city centre is a big building site. The old unloved 1960s Southgate centre has been demolished and in its place is a new Southgate development project. due for completion in 2010.

This photo shows what has become of the old bus station area - it is now a huge hole in the ground. This large construction site is well fenced off, but thankfully the developers have added in a few viewing holes. I was surprised to see the sheer scale of this hole - just look at the size of the workers among the reinforced concrete. This is going to be a new underground car park with shops and flats built above it in due course.

I've just got back from my first visit to the city of Berlin. I was very impressed, Berlin has a very wide variety of sites to visit and of course if full of history. Berlin was a pivotal point in much of the history of the 20th century. In recent years Berlin has seen a large number of new building going up on land that once divided the city - go and visit soon.
Trabant car mural on the Berlin WallOne of the many symbols of Berlin is of course the Berlin Wall - erected in 1961 the Wall was a physical division, an eyesore for all ordinary Berliners. Thankfully time moves on and in November 1989 the impervious barrier was broken for good. Today the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall can be found running along the East bank of the River Spree between Jannowitzbrucke and Warschauer Strasse S-Bahn stations.
This 1.3 km section is called The East Side Gallery and features endless graffiti and wall art murals - 19 years on and this remaining section is looking pretty tatty in parts- alongside they are building the large new O2 arena - change and time is all around.

A single word that sends a chill down your spine.
History tells us that 900,000 victims passed this way - Treblinka is located about 80 miles north west of Warsaw Poland.

The extermination death cap was built near to the main railway line from Warsaw to Bialystok close to the River Bug. A dead end branch line was built into the forest to feed the gas chambers.
The camp was raised to the ground by the Nazi Germans in late 1943 but their evil can still be felt - this is a powerful place. The Poles built todays memorial site between 1959 - 1963.
The route of the final rail track to the final platform has been marked by concrete rail sleepers.

The site of the holocaust gas chambers is marked by a large stone memorial marked with the phrase "Never Again". The whole extermination camp site is remarkably small and it is difficult to comprehend so much evil in such a small place.

Surrounding this memorial are thousands of stones each representing a city, town, village community the home of the victims. In August 1943 a rebellion was organised here and some prisioners managed to escape this terror.
Adjacent to the extermination camp at Treblinka is the site of the penal forced labour camp. Over 10,000 prisoners were worked to death or executed here, victims of forced work in nearby gravel pits - this camp closed in July 1944.

Today the whole site is surrounded by pine forest, peaceful and quiet with only some birdsong to be heard.

"Hello, Hello, Hello, what's all this then ?" - "It's art officer, but not as you know it !"
I spotted this apparent Banksy art piece in Glastonbury, Somerset, UK in the summer of 2007 - unfortunately I had no camera with me. So I made sure I returned a few weeks later.
Here we see an image of a young girl with her teddy bear and picnic basket being frisked by a police officer - it's a satirical view of the security concious World we now live in.
The stencil artwork had been sprayed onto the side of a garage wall just by the Chalice Well near Glastonbury Tor - however by Xmas 2007 it had gone ! It's been over painted. This stock photo shows me, the patient with two armbands - the red armband warns hospital staff that I am allergic to penicillin, the blue band has my personal details. The pad on my hand was applied after they withdrew the saline drip.

July in Britain turned out to be very wet and for many in the Gloucestershire area it was a time of flooding and misery.

This image of an articulated lorry was taken in Gloucester, this road was closed to traffic but the lorry decided to force its way through causing more waves and flooding for those living alongside.

The latest craze among kids seems to be the Diabolo spinning toy. This old Victorian toy has made a big impression among children at the moment. Whilst the Victorians made do a wooden version the current ones are made of tough rubber and feature precision metal axles.

This image shows a young lad aged 11 years old "grinding" his Diabolo outside the Crescent in Bath, England. This image is available now to Picture Researchers looking for images showing the current youth culture - click through the image to be taken directly to Alamy for 24/7 licensing

Work is now in full swing at the former Morlands tannery site in Glastonbury, Somerset. This major brown field regeneration site is being brought back to life after many years of disuse and neglect. The South West Regional Development Agency ( SWRDA ) is leading this major project. New access roads are being built to aid the construction work. The site will eventually house a variety of local businesses and visitor attractions.

This project is being run under the Considerate Constructors Scheme which promotes best practice between contractors and the local neighbourhood.
The following images were taken in early February 2007 - all images are copyright Steven May

In January 2007 the large container ship MSC Napoli got into difficulties in severe winter weather around the South West coast of Britain - the crew were airlifted off as the ship began to break up. The vessel was towed towards calmer waters and finally came to rest 1 mile off the Devon coast between Sidmouth and Branscombe. The Napoli is listing over by about 25 degrees and over 200 containers have fallen off into the sea - many of these have washed up on Branscombe Beach. This windfall brought many people to the beach and some have walked off with BMW motorbikes, wine barrels, nappies and gear boxes ! This scavaging also resulted in a large amount of debris and packaging being scattered on the beach making the mess far worse. Eventually on Wed 24th January 2007 the local Police sealed off the beach and the tidy up effort could begin.
The images below were all taken on Wed 24.1.07 - please contact me directly if you wish to use these or related images - these images clearly show the damage and pollution caused by this shipwreck to the Devon coast line.

This sculpture was one of many works by British artist Philip Jackson displayed in the Bishops Palace in Wells, Somerset, England during the Summer of 2006.
The statue shows a group of hooded monks meeting and planning in a tight group - who knows what they are conspiring !
Philip Jackson is a leading British sculptor and has been chosen to design a statue of famous footballer Bobby Moore due to be placed outside the new Wembley football stadium during 2007.

What's in the jar ? What's in the tray ? What's in the pond ?
Pond dipping is a great activity for school children to discover and learn about the thriving World of diverse life that lives in the natural World around us.
This image was taken on a secondary school science field trip - the creature in the jar is a male red throated Stickleback fish.
A small collection of images relating to this school science nature field study trip can be found via the link below - all are available now for licencsing on Alamy 24/7

I like this image - to me it has a surreal look, they could almost be a pair of glasses or a pair of binoculars. However they are of course none other than a pair of chilled beer bottles, pretty cool !
I shot this image inside my fridge using a tripod and experimented with a variety of exposure times.
Needless to say the beer inside has since been consumed and the green glass bottles dropped off in the local bottle bank ( hopefully to be re-filled and to re-appear in my fridge another day ! ).
A series of these images will be up on Alamy for licensing in a few days - if I can help with your images needs then please email me.

As a stock photographer I'm always interested in new trends, these often act as a source of some inspiration for new stock image material.
Going through my weekly supermarket foodshopping recently I was concerned to see from where on this Earth my food has come from.
I love fresh food but is the price just too high - I am referring to the extreme distance some of our food travels - the term used is "food miles" - these green beans are delicious, but they have travelled to Britian from Morroco, North Africa, approx 2,000 air miles.
What happened to the idea of seasonal vegetables ? I guess we've all grown accustomed to expecting year round fruit and veg - apples from Chile, mangetout from Kenya all flown in as air freight.
Food and Drink stock photography has to reflect these changes, it's a serious issue and one consumers will take more and more notice of.
I have a selection of Food labelling images to help illustrate such trends - take a look at the Link to these images below or call / email me to discuss your stock photo needs.

The summer in Britian this year was pretty good with great weather for much of June and July. Gardens and flowers bloomed and I found myself spending a lot more time looking at plants and nature with fresh eyes.
I found these beautiful five petaled white flowers on a climber in a garden in West Wales in July 2006 - thanks to plant photographer Jason Smalley I understand this plant is the Potato Vine - Solanum jasminoides - I think they look fine and elegant against the summer sky.

We only have a small garden, most of which we have turned into a paved patio area - still I enjoy gardening and love watching flowers grow and bloom. Here I am busy preparing this summers hanging flower baskets with a selection of potted trailing plants - since this photo was taken the hanging basket flowers have burst into life and look great.

Homemade Biscuits - that's Cookies to all you Americans out there !
My daughter made these simple ginger flavoured biscuits the other day - here they are on the baking tray ready to go into the oven - I like eating the arms and legs off the person shaped biscuits, must be something sadistic about my nature !

Dereliction & Industrial Decay
Taken yesterday in Glastonbury, Somerset, England - Glastonbury is of course better known for the legendary Glastonbury Tor and the huge Glastonbury music festival.
This building was part of the old Morlands leather factory- it has been derelict for maybe 20 years. At long last the site is being redeveloped with most of the factory now gone - I don't know the fate of this building - perhaps renovated it would make a fine art gallery ? Think of all the people who used to make a living working here.

Aviation is one of my special Stock Photo subjects - I've always enjoyed being around aircraft and airfields and can happily spend a day watching and photographing airplanes. This image shows an Air France Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet taxying in the evening sunshine at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. I wonder where those passengers are bound for ?

Last week I was shooting in Bristol, UK - there is a lot of re-development going on in Bristol at the moment with large parts of the old Broadmead shopping centre being demolished. Closer to the harbour side I came across this old office tower block being dismantled whilst pedestrians wander nearby - I guess this office is deemed just too out of date
Not sure I'd fancy being the crane operator !
